Toolbox meeting questions

What is a toolbox meeting?

A toolbox meeting (or toolbox talk) is a short safety pre-brief at the start of a shift or job. It covers the day's work, hazards, controls, lessons learned, and any actions from previous meetings. Usually 5-15 minutes.

How often should I run a toolbox meeting?

Daily is best on active sites — first thing in the morning, before crews disperse. Weekly works for office staff or low-activity jobs. After any incident or near-miss is mandatory.

Do I have to keep a record of toolbox meetings?

Yes. Worker consultation is a duty under WHS Acts in every Australian state. A signed toolbox meeting record is the simplest way to prove the consultation happened.

What should I cover in a toolbox meeting?

Today's tasks, site conditions (weather, ground, plant movements, other contractors), any new hazards, lessons from any near-miss, SWMS / JSA reminders, PPE requirements, and actions from previous meetings. Keep it focused — 10 minutes max.
